Church Planting Movements |
(CPM)
Booklet by David Garrison, 1999, built on IBM
Strategy Coordinator training. Contributors included Bill and Susan
Smith and Curtis Sergeant. The team recommended specific tools such as
the "look back, look up, look forward" process now commonly used in many
streams both CPM and DMM. |

Footnote 3 |
CPM > DMM distinction. |
DMM followed, and is in some ways a subset of CPM.
CPM trains, outside the original group in which they came to faith, new
believers to share their faith. DMM trains new believers exclusively
within the group in which they come to faith, to share outside that
group. As such the original CPM approach was developed in 1992 in
Hainan, led by Curtis Sergeant. David Watson developed DMM as a ministry
tool in Bhojpuri and began to share the strategy publicly in 2001. |
|
Footnote 5 |
T4T application of CPM |
Ying Kai attended Curtis Sergeant's first T4T training group and together
with Steve Smith applied this adaptation of the larger CPM system to
extremely unreached areas. For this reason it did not originally include
tools to involve people who were already believers from a more
traditional background. |

Movement principles |
Since movements have many proponents (and requisite critics) there is
debate about best principles and practices. Overall however there is
remarkable convergence. A recent (2020) multi-agency team outlines
principles broadly
here. A great deal can of course be learned by searching the
internet for "disciple making movement principles." |

Leadership for sustainability: The greatest risk to movement sustainability is leadership transition. For this reason it is strongly suggested to prepare movements for inevitable leadership transitions by identifying co- or apprentice-leaders in small teams providing co-facilitation or tri-facilitation. It is recognized that duel and tri-facilitator teams will inevitably develop a lead and support role. Nevertheless, when the time for leadership transition comes, movements led by teams of leaders prove far more sustainable than do movements led by individuals. In cultures favoring strong leaders over team leadership, such leaders must still groom 2 or more apprentice leaders for their inevitable leadership transition for the sake of the sustainability of the movement.
